Mazda debuts new MX-5 with retractable hardtop
Mazda revealed the Mazda MX-5 RF (“retractable fastback”) on the eve of the New York International Auto Show. The latest version of the legendary sports car offers a new dimension of open-top driving fun while at the same time staying true to the purpose of Mazda’s previous retractable hardtop MX-5: Making the roadster experience accessible to a broader range of drivers.
In doing so, Mazda has broken with conventional thinking to create something entirely new. Featuring fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear, the MX-5 RF’s unique rear roof and retractable back window deliver a distinctive new convertible feeling.
The power roof opens and closes with the press of a button while moving at speeds of up to 10km/h. The roof itself stows away compactly and efficiently: Despite the sleek design, the MX-5 RF offers the same boot space as the soft-top model. Also like the soft-top, the new version will be available in Europe with a choice of two revvy petrol engines – the SKYACTIV-G 1.5 and SKYACTIV-G 2.0 – mated either to a delightfully crisp shifting six-speed SKYACTIV-MT gearbox or – exclusively for the MX-5 RF – a six-speed automatic.
Another highlight of the MX-5 RF is the selection of body colours. They include Machine Grey, a new premium colour specially designed to accentuate the subtle yet dynamic surfaces of Mazda’s KODO – Soul of Motion exteriors. Developed in the belief that colour is one of the elements of form, Machine Grey expresses the beauty of a machine’s strength and precision. By intensifying the contrast between light and shadow with a sleek, high-density finish, it gives the impression that the vehicle’s body was sculpted from a solid block of steel.
Paint application is crucial here. Mazda progressed its Takuminuri painting technology originally created for Soul Red, Mazda’s first premium colour, to achieve a precise, high-quality finish that looks as if it were hand-painted by a master craftsman. The system uses a three-coat paint structure consisting of colour, reflective and clear coats. The reflective layer, which contains extremely thin, high-brightness aluminium flakes, shrinks during the drying process to about one-quarter the thickness of most reflective layers. This causes the flakes to lie flat with regular spacing between each flake for a high-density finish that gives the entire surface a sheen when illuminated and a genuine metallic look. Jet black pigment, meanwhile, is used in both the reflective and colour layers. It is visible through the spaces between the aluminium flakes, giving them a black hue and thus heightening the contrast. Machine Grey will be available on a range of Mazda models, including the all-new Mazda CX-9 slated to go on sale in North America this spring.
All-New Mazda MX-5 scoops more awards
The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 has been named both the 2016 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) and the World Car Design of the Year. It is the second Mazda to win the WCOTY award, following the Mazda2 in 2008, and the first model to win both titles in the history of the awards.
World Car of the Year was established in 2004 by an international group of automotive journalists, and the judging panel this year consisted of 73 journalists from 23 different countries. The MX-5 was announced victorious over other finalists the Audi A4 Sedan/Avant and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, at the New York International Auto Show on March 24th. The other finalists for World Car Design of the Year were the Jaguar XE and the Mazda CX-3.
“What a wonderful honour, to have the Mazda MX-5 named both World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year,” said Masahiro Moro, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations, and Managing Executive Officer, Mazda Motor Corporation. “As our iconic MX-5 roadster approaches one-million units of production, this award is proof that it is as young, vibrant, fun and relevant as ever, and proof that every Mazda looks as incredible as it drives, and drives as incredibly as it looks."
"While I accept this award on behalf of the company, I do so representing every Mazda employee, retail partner and customer around the world who has ever felt the joy of driving a pure roadster.”
Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Executive Officer and General Manager of the Design Division, said, “I’m very proud to accept this award, proof that our designs can connect with people all around the world. Our new-generation lineup has been designed under the KODO-Soul of Motion design philosophy which aims to bring cars to life, and we’ve continually refined the beauty of its forms. Mazda is a proud Japanese brand and, moving forward, we are determined to continue enhancing our designs.”
The fourth-generation MX-5 is the sixth model in Mazda’s new-generation line-up of vehicles featuring the full range of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO—Soul of Motion design. Launched globally in 2015, the model has found favour with customers thanks to its vastly reduced curb weight, human-centered design and 'Jinba-ittai' fun-to-drive feel.
The new MX-5 has won over 30 awards so far, including 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan and 2016 UK Car of the Year (UKCOTY). The retractable hardtop version of the model, Mazda MX-5 RF, makes its world debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
Mazda will continue making cars that are fun to drive, aiming to become a 'one-and-only' brand which customers will choose again and again.

We challenged every technical convention when creating our innovative SKYACTIV Technology. From re-engineering the combustion engine, transmission and chassis components to blending moving design with aerodynamic efficiency, we left no stone unturned when reimagining the way cars are made.
Good design should move you. Both literally and figuratively. To achieve new and dynamic forms, our designers and engineers studied the evolution of movement in nature to achieve the breathtaking KODO - Soul of Motion design, which masterfully blends movement with tension,
Could you imagine 'bonding' with a car that was disconnected? Neither can we. That's why we put the connection between car and driver at the heart of every Mazda. Instead of sticking with convention and overwhelming the driver with gadgets that isolate him from the drive experience, we believe that technology should enhance the drive, not distract from it.
i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies take confidence to the highest level. These intelligent systems are designed to help you recognise potential hazards, avoid collisions and to minimise the severity of accidents when they're unavoidable.
"I have been dealing with O’Briens Garage for over 12 years and have never had a bad experience. I can always be made to feel welcome; and always treated with respect. I will continue to be a client; as the saying goes ’if it ain’t broke - don’t fix it’
I’m thrilled with my Citroën. I never even gave one a thought until Roy Corbett ’guided’ me to give one a test drive; I was immediately ’sold’.
So I wish all at O’Briens the very best, and look forward to continuing being a customer. I also have recommended ye to my friends. I just hope they pay ye a visit."
- Geraldine Farrell, Crosshaven, Co. Cork
Purchased a Citroën C4 Cactus, August 2015
"We received excellent hospitality from all the staff at O’Briens.
All queries we had were nearly answered prior to us having a chance to ask them!
We would certainly recommend O’Briens to friends and family and will strongly consider using them when servicing or changing our car... travelling to Cork to do so. Many thanks to you all"
- Eamon Ruddy, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan
Purchased a Mazda CX-5, August 2015
"Lovely people to deal with especially Domhnall O Sullivan. I was in and out in 45 minutes with the car bought. Thank you very much"
- Emer Connaughton, Mallow, Co. Cork
Purchased an Opel Astra, September 2015
"This is our first time dealing with O’Briens and I must say we were very impressed. Both my husband Tim and I have already recommended your dealership to others. Domhnall O Sullivan was excellent. A very pleasant gentleman to deal with, answered all our questions, took plenty time with us but most important of all he was not one bit pushy as that is the biggest put off in most dealerships, salesmen are too pushy. So full marks to Domhnall and that is what really mattered to me to be honest. He was a pleasure to deal with. We also met with Roy who was very chatty and friendly as well and was excellent on the phone. Plus we got good luck wishes on our purchase from the owner!!”
